A very impressive Castle Museum, I was pleasantly surprised at how many historical exhibits there were to absorb and I very much enjoyed taking a slow walk through the art galleries. The top 3 storys are more about Norman history and the history of the castle itself. It was nice to walk on the battlements and see panoramic views of Norwich even if they are impeded by safety barriers. Highly recommended, a must visit for anybody visiting Norwich.
This is a very impressive venue which offers a great deal to see. The structure is interesting as the architecture is nothing like a traditional castle. In fact the building is more of a medieval palace than a defensive building. The café is pleasant and I found the coffee to be very good although the choice of cakes was rather limited. There is a small shop which offers the range of goods one would expect but also offers a pleasing selection of cards. The exhibition spaces cover 5 floors. The art works are impressive particularly in terms of landscape. The natural history section brings one face to face with stuffed animals. That, in this day and age, is a novel but interesting experience. There are other exhibitions such as the teapot collection and artefacts from local history. There is also a light and sound show. The toilet facilities were clean and tidy. All of the staff members that we encountered were friendly and helpful. If one was spending a day in Norwich it would be worth allowing time to visit the castle. Should the visit be left till later in the day there is a twilight discount
Well worth a visit for £17, especially you like reading up on British history. I was only there from 2pm until around closing time at 17:30, but you could spend all day there if you wanted. There are museums within a museum ranging from military, animal and an art gallery. The top of the castle, the castle keep will give you good views of Norwich. The cafe is a little on the expensive side. £2.50 for a small pineapple juice wasn't great, but the shop is affordable for souvenirs. There are also lifts which cater for people with disabilities, that will take you up each floor, so it's easy to get around. There is a lot to look detailing the history of the castle and East Anglia in general, detailing various historical finds in the region. The highlight for me was looking at the graffiti on some of the castle walls showing people visiting from the 1960's for example. All in all, an interesting way to spend an afternoon.
Lovely castle to visit and great to see the recent restoration works. We particularly liked the light/projection show in the main hall. If anything we could have sat for longer watching it as it was very interesting. Great to see the that the old displays remain downstairs too. My only reason for not giving a 5* review was price point for entry was a bit higher than I would have liked and think this probably might discourage some people. Lots more locals would probably visit and more often with perhaps a NR postcode discount.
A fantastically well preserved Noman Keep. There is a multitude of levels and different areas to explore. The Castle and in house museums are very interactive and child friendly. The roof top gives a panaromic view of the city. Rooms are decorated in a style that would be true to their original purpose. Littled with props and colours, it brings to life how the rooms would have been utilised. The museums downstairs are also of particular interest, I found the Roman and Iceni part particularly engaging. A well equipped shop and friendly staff as well as Lift access across the site. They also have a good selection of tickets types.
